Making Mondays Sunny

P’s Quote

“I’m never gonna wait that extra twenty minutes to text you back, and I’m never gonna play hard to get when I know your life has been hard enough already. When we all know everyone’s life has been hard enough already it’s hard to watch this game we make of love, like everyone is playing checkers with their scars, saying checkmate when they get out without a broken heart. Just to be clear, I don’t want to get out without a broken heart. I intend to leave this life so shattered there’s going to have to be a thousand separate heavens for all of my separate parts.” -Andrea Gibson

Things P is Grateful For

my sweet sweet friends and family, seriously how did I get so lucky? I can’t even start to express how thankful I am for that. Other than that I’m thankful for IAP, for being in San Francisco, that none of my flights got delayed the second time around, for google maps, for kind strangers pointing me in the right direction when my phone dies and I don’t have google maps, for people who send me sweet text messages that make me smile, for being able to drive, going to Hawaii, chats in the car late at night with C, C and I fucking shit up, hopping from B&N to Fuddruckers to the pound store with E, good food, like really really good food, the kind that makes you close your eyes and think HOLY HELL YUM, for snail mail, for the cafe just down the street from our apartment that has free WIFI thank god, for green tea lattes at Starbucks (did you know this was a thing E!??!?!? My roomie just turned me on to them! I always knew about the frappes but for some reason I never thought about turning it into a latte! It really is life-changing), for my awesome job, for the startup lifestyle, for Instagram, for kisses, for new people, new adventures and new memories.

Things to make this week sunnier

1. Embrace the fact that I don’t have internet after 6 pm. It’s weird but it’s kinda nice.

2. Embrace the fact that I’m all alone in a brand new city and that’s awesome and empowering.

Love you!

P

Quote of the Week:

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”

Golda Meir

Dear P,

It has been a been a beautiful week filled with great food and better companions. The “Things I’m Grateful For” list this week might as well be “Best Food in Austin”.

Things I’m Grateful For:

My mama’s visit, getting this article into Thought Catalog, learning that I was accepted to my study abroad to Australia next spring, eating at Zocalo CafeKerby Lane, and Clay Pit in the last twenty-four hours, feeling better after being droopy at the beginning of the week, journal night with I, dinner at Hula Hut with S, hot chocolate from Walton’s, a visit inside our breathtaking Texas capital, samples from Whole Foods, finishing Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography on the Librivox podcast (it was free), getting your mom’s friend request acceptance on Facebook, my stellar run last Monday, visiting the Half-Priced Books in Austin for the first time, my on-point outfit last Tuesday, and missing our very sad UT football game yesterday.

Hungry yet, P?

Things to Make Next Week Sunnier:

Continue following the daily practice, study hard for neurobiology, trying to start doing yoga and meditating again and avoid comparing my life to the lives of others.

I’m missing you loads and I hope everything is stellar in Boston.

Love,

E

Making Mondays Sunny

Hello my dearest E!

I miss you loads! I haven’t done a MMS in a very long time. I’ve been hella busy. My g cal looks like someone threw up all over it. I took my intro to neuroscience test today, so I have a few moments to spare before I start studying for my next few exams.

My favorite quote this week:

“You think I’m not a goddess?

Try me.

This is a torch song.

Touch me and you’ll burn.”

-Margaret Atwood, except from the poem Helen of Troy does Countertop Dancing

Things I’m Thankful For: S’s mom coming in from Finland and me getting to hang out with her, me hanging out with all of my best friends’ parents at red dress gala, getting all pretty for red dress gala, Starbucks and pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween, costumes, dressing up, having a blast even if it’s while studying for 10 hours straight, my little who is very adorable and cute, my big and my big big who I’ve gotten exponentially closer to this semester, playing doubles in volleyball and the feeling of smashing a ball, S doing Harvard stadiums with me, S sharing chocolate with me, K for always dealing with me, cuddling with M, crisp fall weather, getting to wear boots and cute sweaters, frozen mangoes, eating cookie dough raw, watching Friends with all of my friends, an amazing night out with friends, having random skype talks with E, and all the amazing people I have for me here and back home.

Things to make this week sunnier:

I really want to try to slow things down because I don’t know where this semester has gone and I feel like I’m so busy ALL the time so I’m going to:

Try to work out more

Try to study ahead as much as possible

Try not to skip a single class

Do some journaling or read a few pages of a book

Take time to be present

Here are some pics from the last few weeks–mostly from red dress gala and Halloween (I was a minion):

Kissing Summer Good-Bye

“No summer ever came back, and no two summers ever were alike. Times change, and people change; and if our hearts do not change as readily, so much the worse for us.”

-Nathaniel Hawthorne

Dear P,

Isn’t it ridiculous how our lives keep getting better and better? I thought that summer 2012 would be un-toppable, but it looks like we’ve done it again. We both hung out with fun, joyful people, had the opportunity to give science-ing a try, and read a bunch of great books. My summer involved some great music and poetry, going to the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, lounging at Barton Springs, and getting splattered with bodily fluids while volunteering at the hospital.

I’m so glad I got to see so much of you this summer, P. Let’s start planning to make next summer even better.

Love,

E

Things I Love This Week: Wow there just feels like I have so many things to be grateful for and to be happy about. Here I go. I love the fact that finals are over, the fact that I’ve finished my freshman year at MIT, how I’ve made so many amazing friends this year that I feel like I’ve known for years, going to Boston Calling Music Festival and getting to watch awesome artists like Matt and Kim, The Shins, Marina and the Diamonds and Fun, moving into my sorority house with my best friends, living right in the middle of Kenmore Square, getting a B in physics (this is an achievement, I swear), walking down Newbury street without a care in the world, Memorial Day Weekend and how lucky we are to live in a country like the USA, my passionate peach smoothie I’m currently drinking, this kickass pair of sandals I just bought, and the fact that I’m going to be reunited with my friends and families in t minus 3 hours.

Things to Make This Week Sunny:

Enjoy summer

Hang out with my friends and family as much as possible

Things I Love This Week

For some reason I’m having trouble thinking of the things I love this week, so I guess I’ll revert back to the things I always love in life

My family, texts from my little brothers, my best friend E, sleeping, being alone, going to the library (the Boston Public Library is absolutely beautiful), texting C all the time, yoga, free smoothies, how helpful people are here all the time, the flavor pineapple surf, and the fact that summer is almost here and school is almost freaking over, and the thought of being back home in t minus 3 weeks

Things to Make This Week Sunnier

study really really freaking hard

eat some froyo

work out as much as I did last week (I really went at it)

study some more

go to the movie theater

hang out with people I don’t usually hang out with

study study study

My birthday is coming up soon! At this current point in time I can’t say that I’m really excited for it. I’m not really looking forward to it and it’s my first birthday away from home, which is sad. It’s also on Wednesday, which is humpday, making it exponentially lamer. I guess 19 isn’t really a big one, except for that you know it’s your last year of teenagedom, which is both exhilarating and sad.

Here’s for hoping that next week is a good one.

Sorry, P! I got so sucked into studying yesterday that I completely forgot MMS!

E’s Quote

“What a joy it must be to be a truly great writer, even if it means a shotgun at the finish”
-Charles Bukowski
I’m sorry this is a depressing quote. I don’t believe you have to be suicidal to be a truly great writer, but lately I have been investigating the ties between mental illness and creativity. I think Bukowski sums this correlation up with his usual grit.

Things I Loved This Week

The weather in Austin. I can’t imagine anything more perfect.

Eating Indian food on top of a hill Saturday night.

My dorm had a festival Saturday. It involved a lot of bouncy contraptions, bubbles, ice cream and a climbing wall.

Making pumpkin muffins with A squared while watching “The Lion King 2”

The hunt for the perfect overalls with I. I still haven’t found them yet.

Eeyore’s Birthday.

Getting glamorous Friday night. Then traipsing home early enough to indulge in a music-sharing and freestyle fest.

Snapchats. Snapchats. Snapchats.

Quizlets, Koofers, and chai tea lattes: the three ingredients to actually studying.

I’ve just been feeling a lot of love this week, you know? I’m so grateful to have you and T and A and I. It makes me tear up to think of how lucky I am.

I wrote James Atrucher and JAMES ALTRUCHER WROTE ME BACK. It was the most exciting thing ever. We’re basically best friends now.

Things to Make Me Happy This Week:

Ace my finals

Keep following Altrucher’s “Daily Practice” (laminated for me by I’s mom)

Sending you lots of love, P! Keep on keeping on, and you’ll be home in Texas soon!

E

P’s Quote

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news my mom would always say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’  To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mothers words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers—so many caring people in this world.”

I know I already used this one this week but it’s so good I’m putting it on here twice. It was also really conducive to the week I’ve had.

Things I’m Grateful for This Week

Boston strong, the unity and community of this beautiful and strong city, police officers like Sean Collier, the BPD, the reactions to the bombings and shootings, how lucky I am to be alive and safe, that all of my friends are okay, and that fate somehow chose us to be the lucky ones.

I’m grateful for the millions of texts and phone calls and facebook messages I got from friends and family from all over.

I’m grateful that this week is over and that Boston and MIT are on their way back to how things used to be.

I’m thankful for the ability to move on from this, for impromptu dance parties in the thunderdome, for golf parties, for running across the Harvard bridge in shorts and sandals with the wind blowing in my face, for the amazing celebrations after the shooters were caught, the stunning view of the Boston skyline I have at all times, for the trees and flowers blossoming everywhere, the fact that p-setting is fun when you’re doing it with friends, jam sessions while studying, Sporcle, throwback Disney songs, throwback chick flicks that I watched with my friends this week like John Tucker Must Die and A Cinderella Story, my family, blogging, going to record stores with S, buying AWESOME records, the restaurant Veggie Galaxy where I had one of the best omelets I’ve ever eaten in my life, wearing hats, wearing bows, instant coffee, my tests for this week being done with, the feeling of finishing a pset, my absolutely hilarious friends, selfies at 4 am, talking to S until the wee hours of the night, delicious food at frat houses, dancing at the Estate, back massages late at night, B52 shots, polaroids, snuggling with your favorite people and froyo being delivered straight to your dorm.

Things to Make This Week Sunnier

Yea, this week is going to be sunnier no matter what I do, so I’m just going to enjoy the good weather, try to go running a lot, and explore the city as much as possible.

My thoughts will be with the affected individuals and families.

I love you so much E and I miss you and C loads and loads.

Things I Loved This Week:

That twitter exists so that I could see all the times you were still alive this week (I still frantically called you- sorry, P), getting to home to see my mom, little bro, and grandparents, that I’m going to have an awesome summer, a great opportunity in the form of a summer fellowship, the perfectly ripe avocado I am currently devouring, and going to see the Lumineers with my friend J. Their opening act was called Shakes and Ropes and they were good, too – you should look them up. I’m grateful that my mom wasn’t even mad when I woke her up because I was crying so hard at the movie “My Girl”- it’s so sad, P. Only watch it if you are prepared to ball your eyes out. I’m grateful for my brilliant UT advisor who has helped me navigate my confusing and constantly changing schedule this week. I’m grateful for my massage yesterday and that I finished 11/22/63. I was a little disappointed at the ending, but, you know, we can’t have everything in life. I am grateful for the blogger James Altucher, whose stunning honesty makes his work absolutely groundbreaking. I’e been steamrolling through his fresh and interesting eBooks. I don’t completely agree with all of his ideas, but I like the gist.  I’ve been trying for total honesty this week, and so far it’s been very cathartic and no one I’ve talked to has been offended. We don’t even realize how much we censure ourselves.

Things to Make Next Week Sunnier

Follow Altucher’s rules on “How to be the Luckiest Guy on the Planet in 4 Easy Steps”, found here. I’ve been struggling a lot with the sleeping schedule, but I like the idea of going to sleep early so you can wake up early.

I’ve made plans to volunteer with kids twice this week! I’m so excited- I love chilluns!

Go through my full skin care routine every single night.

Keep up the momentum we’ve gathered on the blog this week! Your post was so moving and beautiful, P!

Bake night with I tomorrow!

I hope you have a super-fantastic week, P! Happy Earth Day!

P’s Quote:

“I have one last hope for you, which is something that I already had at 21. The friends with whom I sat on graduation day have been my friends for life. They are my children’s godparents, the people to whom I’ve been able to turn in times of trouble, friends who have been kind enough not to sue me when I’ve used their names for Death Eaters. At our graduation we were bound by enormous affection, by our shared experience of a time that could never come again, and, of course, by the knowledge that we held certain photographic evidence that would be exceptionally valuable if any of us ran for Prime Minister.”

― J.K. Rowling

Dear E, the week right after spring break is always a hard week, if only because we are trying to get back into the swing of things. I had a really nice week. The end to my week wasn’t so great but I guess that’s why we have next week to try all over again right? I’m sorry your week wasn’t too hot, but I know it will get better. That being said, I did do a lot of awesome things this week. I started shadowing this REALLY awesome doctor at Mass General Hospital and I absolutely LOVE IT. Doing that has reminded me how much I love working with people and how much I absolutely want to be a doctor. Sometimes its easy to forget what I’m doing here. And on top of that I’ve been putting my new camera to good use. I took loads of photos at a surprise birthday party we threw for A. Anyway, just wanted to give you a short update on my week. Love you!

Things I Love

when S makes me tea, friends who will come to frat houses in their PJ’s to come get you when you need them (K, my roomie4lyfe and this other really great guy named PH), basically everything about K and how I owe her so bad in basically all aspects of life, when you get into bed and just pass out, getting to scrub in on two surgeries this week, learning SO MUCH about laryngeal surgery and how our voices work, getting to see actual patients, walking around Charles Town, feeling like a master of the T, unwinding at yoga classes, my Essie nail polish named limo-scene that I am currently obsessed with (both my toenails and my fingernails are painted with this color haha), my new oversized Ray-Bans that I am IN LOVE WITH, how sunglasses make you feel like a movie star, the fact that there’s enough sun for me to actually wear sunglasses, walking around Nebury, shamelessly taking pictures with S and M, sushi mixers, chili chocolate, snuggling in bed with S and watching Revenge, my dads texts because they are hilarious and SO CUTE, empty notebooks waiting to be filled, surprise birthday parties for close friends, giving gifts that people really like, coupons, baseball caps itching to be worn, the fact that the weather is actually warming up, not having any tests this week, and the coming 4 day weekend we have.

Quote

“Let me tell you about the nap. It’s absolutely fantastic. When I was a kid, my father was always trying to tell me how to be a man. And he said – I was maybe nine – he said, Philip, whenever you take a nap, take your clothes off and put a blanket over you and you’re going to sleep better. Well, as with everything, he was right. And so I now do that and I come back from the swimming pool I go to and I have my lunch and I read the paper and I take this glorious thing called a nap. And then the best part of it is that when you wake up, for the first 15 seconds you have no idea where you are. You’re just alive. That’s all you know and it’s bliss. It’s absolute bliss.”

— Philip Roth

I stole this quote (like an artist) from Austin Kleon’s blog, http://tumblr.austinkleon.com, today. I thought you would appreciate it, P. I absolutely love all your pictures! Give K a hug for taking care of you for me 🙂 Also, your floral pants are my favorite.

Things I’m Grateful for This Week

The super-spectacular-awesome I, who took me to ice cream and let me crash at her apartment after a Thursday night meltdown. I don’t know what I would have done without her this week. I’m grateful for great friends that go with you to Kirby Lane for queso on midnight on a Wednesday. I’m grateful for the chocolate cake and smiley faces my friend J brought to help me finish my lab report last night. I’m grateful for the C and S and our mutual acceptance of the fact that if a party is boring, we need to leave and find a different one. Preferably one with A in it:

image

In order: Yours truly, C, the only person I know who is a more accomplished napper than you, S, looking hot as always, and A, who snuck us into the party.

I’m grateful for the awesome research opportunities here at UT and that I learn so much every day. I am grateful that my mom and dad are hanging out with my adorable cousins so that I can skype them. I’m grateful for the laughs that I get from Muggle Hustle (http://mugglehustle.com) and New Girl. I’m still making my way through 11/22/63, and it’s well worth the length.

Mostly, I’m grateful that every week is a fresh start and a new chance to create things to be grateful for.

Hugs and kisses,

E

The past three weeks for me have been absolutely crazy—filled with days of making amazing new friends, partying super hard, stuffing my face with an enormous amount of dessert, trying to navigate my way around campus, exploring Boston, crawling around in tunnels, climbing things, shopping, decorating, and pretty much anything you can think of. Here are the highlights…

the amazing friends I’ve already made (:

MY LIFE ❤

Doing FLP! Freshman Leadership Program. Around campus, we’re kind of thought of as a cult. Probably because we play stupid games and run around chanting ASA. But seriously, I think that was one of the best experiences ever! Hearing some people’s stories was really heartbreaking but I feel like I’ve changed so much after that experience. My cluster leaders were fucking AWESOME.

image

My roomies! My roommates are SO awesome. Priscila (the one on the right), is like a super chill, does her own thing, goes with the flow kinda person. She always says randomly funny things. And she brought like 4 tubs of listerine. It’s hilarious. I really like her. And Katie (the one on the left) is this HILARIOUS (in a strange way), kind of sarcastic person who’s also super chill. Except I know she secretly thinks I’m super messy. Oh and she does this thing where she randomly winks at people. She’s a super awesome winker. It’s the best thing ever. Katie is one of my closest friends here! She did FLP too. She’s pretty freaking awesome.

image

Being in a sorority! I’m officially a member of Alpha Phi! Recruitment was kinda sucky but it was totally worth it because I love all the girls in A Phi! Everyone so far has been super nice and I love my pledge class! Also, my big bear (like my big sister/mentor) is this girl named Hailey and she is SOOOO sweet! She’s also super pretty. She brought Katie and I cupcakes from Georgetown cupcakes! (In case you don’t know what that is, it’s the famous cupcake place in DC Cupcakes). She’s super cute, I think you would really like her! Anyway, I am really excited to get to know all of my sisters ❤

image

The rain! It never rains in Texas! I think I’m really going to like having seasons. Plus, fall fashion is like the best, come on. SPEAKING OF FASHION, omg it’s like fashion week or something. Yesterday was fashion night out and there was like a red carpet on Newbury Street and all of the stores were having open houses and giving out free things! This place is so awesome.

image

(I don’t have a picture of the rain….so here’s some jellyfish we saw at our aquarium party)

Joining crew. OMG WTF. If I stick with this then I will be a D1 Varsity athlete. Okay, not if, when. Because I’m totally sticking with this. It’s going to be SO AMAZING. I won’t get to compete for a while (since obviously, I’ve never rowed a freaking boat), but I’m excited to meet a ton of new people, get in shape, and have order in my life.

image

image

image

image

Look! We baked a double layer birthday cake for our friend Alex! (That’s super impressive when you’re working from a college dorm.) He’s from Mexico. He’s super duper cool.

image

MIT. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I love it so much. I love the people, I love that Boston is just right over the bridge, I love going out with my friends and I even love staying in with my friends and just p-setting and eating oreos. This is the best place EVER. There’s always stuff going on and I seriously never have a spare second. Anyway, I’ll end this post here, and hopefully I can give you details and specific stories sometime soon. Sorry I keep missing your calls. I’m so busy all the time. I want to talk to you soon. I miss you so much it makes my stomach hurt when I think about it. I hope you’re having fun all the way over there in Austin.

Love,

P

E’s Quote for the Week

I’ve been reading “The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam” translated by Edward Fitzgerald and I have some quotes from it to share with you:

“Why, if the Soul can fling the Dust aside,

And naked on the Air of Heaven ride,

Were’t not a Shame- were’t not a Shame for him

In this clay carcass to reside.”

“A Hair perhaps divides the False and True.”

“Strange, is it not? that of the myriads who

Before us passed the door of Darkness through,

Not one returns to tell us of the Road,

Which to discover we must travel too.”

Things I’m Grateful for This Week

  • My beautiful dorm!
  • My interesting, passionate roommate. I have never met someone with so much conviction in her beliefs who also lacks judgement for people that do not share them. It is inspiring and we have deep conversations at least three times a day. I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of growing because of her. She’s the one to the far left:
The photo is really hazy because there was condensation on the lens, but it kind of ended up looking cool.
  • The salad and soup bar at our cafeteria.
  • The range of information and growing opportunities listed on the Self Improvement section of Stumbleupon
  • All the little bits and pieces of Austin that make it the most beautiful and magical place on Earth

What I Want to Do to Make This Week Sunnier

  • Find football tickets. I have to go to at least one college football game this season.
  • Find all of my classes beforehand.
  • Continue to take this opportunity of constantly meeting people to improve my social skills-
  • But at the same time take time for myself to regenerate.
  • Read “To the Lighthouse” by Virginia Wolf. I got it from the library yesterday and I am excited. I have a feeling you may be getting some Virginia Wold quotes next week.

Have a great week! P will post MMS sometime in the next few days 🙂
